The machine described by this specification is intended for use in the aerospace manufacturing industry. It shall provide adequate capacity to perform machining operations (stock removal) on ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It shall be capable of utilizing all commonly used milling cutters for operations such as pocketing, sculpturing, slabbing, detailing, facing, etc.

All numerically controlled axes of motion shall be automatically controlled by programmed numerical data media or manually controlled by suitable controls. (Automatic control by means of manual input of numerical data shall be optional)

This specification provides a standard for the manufacture, performance, inspection and procurement of a numerically controlled, wide bed, contour milling machine. This standard lists minimum requirements and is not to limit design changes.
