1.1This test method covers a method for the determination of available sulfide in water and wastewater in mass concentrations ranging from 0.04 mg/L to 4000 mg/L. Reduction of the volume of the water sample applied allows the determination of higher mass concentrations.
1.2Soluble sulfides will be completely determined and undissolved sulfides will be either completely or partially determined depending on their solubility at pH 1.0 and aging properties. Examples are sulfides of zinc, iron, and manganese. The sulfide portion of polysulfides is incompletely determined by this test method.
1.3Some sulfides cannot be determined, such as mercury sulfide. Particle-bound sulfides are determined too. If particle-bound sulfides are not to be included, the sample shall be filtered under conditions of excess of oxygen. If easily released sulfide (alkali earth and alkali) is to be determined only, the acidification to do so is by buffer pH 4.0.
1.4Units-The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.5This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.6This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
