The electrodeposited cadmium platings covered by this standard are intended primarily for use on fasteners and related hardware as corrosion protective platings on ferrous and other non-corrosion resistant basis metals and, secondarily, as a sacrificial barrier between metals which possess incompatible electromotive potentials for galvanic corrosion protection.
STABILIZEDPurpose.
This specification defines the procedures to be followed for the electrodeposited cadmium plating of fasteners, fastening systems and other related hardware primarily as a corrosion protective plating.
Classification.
The plating shall be of the following types and classes as specified.
Types.
Types refer to post plating treatments or lack thereof.
Type I – As plated
Type II – Supplemental chromate treatment
Type III – Supplemental phosphate treatment
Classes.
Classes refer to the thickness of the cadmium plating (reference 3.4.1).
Class 1 – .0005 inches minimum thickness (13 micrometers)
Class 2 – .0003 inches minimum thickness (8 micrometers)
Class 3 – .0002 inches minimum thickness (5 micrometers)
Recommendations for improvement or correction of this specification should be directed to the Aerospace Industries Association.
