This recommended practice presents the currentstate of knowledge and technology in the fields ofstatic electricity, lightning, and stray currentsapplicable to the prevention of hydrocarbon ignitionin the petroleum industry and is based on bothscientific research and practical experience.The principles discussed in this recommendedpractice are applicable to other operations whereignitable liquids and gases are handled. Their useshould lead to improved safety practices andevaluations of existing installations and procedures.
